We don’t typically put our trust in strangers, do we?
Before we make that commitment, we want to know what the person is like: if they keep their promises, if they’re honest and if they’re kind.
Well, Psalm 9:10 says that the same thing is true of our relationship with God.
“Those who know Your name trust in You, for You, LORD, have never forsaken those who seek You.” Psalm 9:10 (NIV)
You see, in Scripture, names represent character—who a person really is. So in this verse, the Psalmist tells us that the basis of our trust in God is knowing what He is like.
And actually, the rest of Psalm 9 is a great place to learn about God’s character because the Psalmist praises three of His attributes:
- God is the sovereign ruler.
We can put our trust in God because He is not weak and powerless. He sits on the throne—not just over one country, but over the entire world. In verse 2, the Psalmist praises Him saying, “O Most High.” That means no other ruler comes close to His level of authority and dominion. He is the most high ruler.
But not only is He unmatched in dominion, He is also the only eternal ruler. Think about it: whether earthly rulers hold their position for a season or for a lifetime, their terms only last but so long. But God lives forever, so He can reign forever.
- God is the righteous judge.
We can put our trust in God because He is the ultimate judge and all His verdicts are made in righteousness and justice. He upholds rights (verse 4), He judges without prejudice (verse 8) and He avenges (verse 12).
“The LORD is known by his acts of justice.” (Psalm 9:16, NIV)
- God is the hope of the hurting.
We can put our trust in God because, as verse 18 puts it, “God will never forget the needy; the hope of the afflicted will never perish.” God Himself is our never-ending hope. He is our safe place in trouble (verse 9) and He hears us when we cry for help (verse 12).
The same God who sits on the highest throne and conducts Himself in all righteousness and justice, cares about you and me.
So. Now that we know these truths about God’s character, what will your response be?
Will you choose to live out Psalm 9:10 by daily putting your trust in Him?
The more you seek God, the more you will know Him. And the more you know Him, the more you will trust Him.
So what do you need to trust Him with today? He is trustworthy.
