“If the LORD had not been my help, my soul would soon have dwelt in the abode of silence.”Psalm 94:17 (NASB)
“If the Lord had not been my help, ______________________.”
How would you complete that sentence?
Maybe you’d say, “If the Lord had not been my help, I would still be looking for love in all the wrong places.” Or maybe you could even say, “If the Lord had not been my help, I would still be hooked on drugs.”
Each of us has our own story and truly only God knows where we would be apart from His grace. But as Believers—no matter what our journeys have looked like—there are certain truths that all of us can fill in that blank with:
If the Lord had not been my help…
My identity would be found in my performance.
I would never have rest from the pressure to be “good enough.”
I would still be carrying the weight of all my mistakes.
I would find no purpose in life.
I would have no lasting peace.
I could have no joy in the midst of suffering.
I would have no hope for the future.
I would be separated from God.
I would have to die for my own sins.
Without Jesus, that’s where we would be. Praise God for our Savior!
In Him, we have…
an identity and worth that is permanent.
True rest—because Jesus did the work for us.
Forgiveness of our sins.
Purpose in life.
Peace that surpasses our understanding.
Joy (even in the hard times.)
Hope for the future.
An intimate relationship with God.
Eternal life.
So take a few minutes today to think about where you would be if the Lord had not been your help. And then praise Him for all He has given you!
