When I was little, I joined a local children’s choir. We learned a great variety of music—and on occasion, we sang patriotic songs together. One of my favorites was “God Bless America” by the great Irving Berlin.
Around this same time, my family took a trip to England. But I was little and didn’t fully understand that we had left the United States and entered a foreign country.
So I boldly marched down a London street belting “God Bless America” at the top of my lungs.
People were polite, but my family says we got some very funny looks that day!
Have you ever felt like, as a Christian, you get funny looks when you express your beliefs?
That’s because this world is not our native country—we are foreigners here!
In John 15:19, Jesus puts it this way: “If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world…” (NIV)
No wonder we get funny looks! But sharing the truth about Jesus is worth it.
So with childlike fervor, lets sing praises to our Savior in this foreign land by living lives conformed to His character.
