Has something in the Bible ever left you scratching your head?
If you’re not a Christian, some things in the Bible probably make very little sense.
And even if you are a Christian, I guarantee there are things you still don’t fully understand. None of us have it all figured out!
And there’s a reason for that. The Bible was written by God, whose mind and person are more complex than we can even begin to fathom.
So to truly understand what God is saying in Scripture, we need His help.
In John 14:26, Jesus points us to the Holy Spirit for this very need: “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.” (ESV)
The Holy Spirit is the best Bible Teacher.
He is greater than your favorite blogger, conference speaker or even theologian.
Why? Because He’s also the Bible’s Author.
Think about it.
If you wanted a true understanding of any other book, you could ask a friend what it meant—but they would just be giving their opinion. They could be wrong! But if you asked the author, they could tell you what the book really meant.
And it’s the same with Scripture. When something in the Bible confuses us, the best person to ask is the One who wrote it.
2 Peter 1:21 tells us that all Scripture was inspired by the Holy Spirit—people wrote down the words, but the Holy Spirit is the One who gave them the words!
But not only will He teach you what the Bible means, He will also help you remember it. You see, Scripture wasn’t meant to just go in one ear and out the other. It was meant to stick with us and to change us.
So let me ask you:
Where do you need the Holy Spirit to teach or remind you today?
Is there a passage of Scripture you don’t understand? Stop and pray before you read. Ask Him to help you understand its true meaning.
Or maybe there’s a verse you really need to remember in your current circumstances, but you’re so overloaded that you can’t hold it. Ask the Holy Spirit to bring that verse to your remembrance.
God doesn’t ask us to study or remember the Scriptures on our own…so let’s take advantage of the Helper He has sent to us. Let’s ask the Holy Spirit to teach us as we open God’s Word today.
