Imagine yourself standing on the edge of a beautiful mountain (taking a selfie, of course) when suddenly you feel the ground beneath you give way.
As you fall, you grab hold of a protruding rock and hold on for dear life. You feel strong for the moment, but soon your hands start to cramp and your grip gives way.
You cry out, expecting to feel a whoosh of wind as you fall…but nothing happens.
You’re still there, suspended in the air.
You look up in amazement. All that time you thought you were holding yourself up, but the truth is someone was holding onto you.
As Christians, this is our reality. Psalm 63:8 puts it this way: “My soul clings to You; Your right hand upholds me.” (NASB)
We as Christians are called to “hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering” (Hebrews 10:23, NASB). But the truth is, our faith (even more than our hands) is weak. One day, our faith is strong and the next we’re floundering.
Thank God that our eternal security isn’t based on our ability to hold on to God! When our faith feels strong and when it gives way, God is holding on to us. His grip secures us.
