Everything around us is changing. The world today is different than it was when the year began:
Jobs look different. School looks different. Healthcare, relationships and the future all look different.
And with these changes swirling around us, it’s easy to get dizzy and knocked off-balance.
But Psalm 16:8 says this, “I keep my eyes always on the LORD. With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken.”(NIV)
In that verse we learn that keeping our equilibrium in times like these is dependent on 2 things: what we focus on and what we hold onto for support.
- WHAT WE FOCUS ON
If you want to keep from getting dizzy, focus on an immovable object.
Like I mentioned earlier: everything around us is changing and moving at a rapid pace. So if we focus on those things, we won’t stand firm for very long.
“I keep my eyes always on the LORD,” says the Psalmist. He has found the only One who is truly unchanging.
And if we keep our eyes focused on Him, we will be able to stand firm when everything around us is shifting.
- WHAT WE HOLD ONTO FOR SUPPORT
What’s the first thing you do when dizziness hits you?
You look for something to grab onto, right?
And it’s important to grab onto something strong enough to hold you up.
If you grab onto a rickety old chair, for instance, it won’t be able to support your weight and you will still fall.
So we need to ask ourselves—what are we leaning on for support?
If this pandemic has taught us anything, it’s that bank accounts are quickly drained and even the strongest people we know are not invincible. So they can’t be our ultimate sources of stability.
Only God can be that for us.
The Psalmist put it this way:“With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken.”
The LORD is strong enough to hold our full weight. And even when we get tired and lose our grip on Him, He will never lose His grip on us.
He will hold us steady even if everything around us falls apart.
So the next time you feel overwhelmed by the changes and uncertainty you see, fix your eyes and your grip on the only One who can anchor you: the LORD God Almighty.
He is our stability in unstable days.
