What should my major be?
What kind of career should I pursue?
Should we break up?
What step should I take? And when should I take it?
If you’ve ever struggled to make big life decisions, you are not alone.
We’re faced with a litany of choices every day and sometimes it’s hard to know which path to take.
If you ask the internet for help, you will find an endless list of decision-making tips: Be objective. Do your research. Make a pro’s and con’s list. Consider the fallout. Consult wise people.
And that’s all good.
But they are missing the most important tip of all:
Ask God to guide you.
You see, in Psalm 32:8 God says, “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you.”(ESV)
What an incredible promise!
The God who knows all things, considers every factor and wants the best for us stands ready and willing to guide us.
And don’t you think that God-guided decisions are better than the ones we make on our own?
Because He is omniscient, His decisions take into consideration factors we don’t even know exist. Because He is omnipotent, His decisions aren’t impacted by fear. And because He is holy, His decisions are never tainted with sinful motives.
God’s decisions are infinitely better than our own. And He offers to be our life advisor. Our guide. Our counselor.
So why don’t we ask Him to guide us more often?
I don’t know about you, but sometimes I talk myself out of it with faulty reasoning like:
“I shouldn’t bother God with something so small”
“I have to make a decision now. I don’t have time to pray!”
“God wants me to be independent.”
Or the ever-false statement: “I’ve got this”
But this verse is a reminder that God wants us to come to Him with options in hand… so that we can lift them up and ask, “Which one should I choose?”
Good decisions come from seeking the counsel of our all-wise God.
So let me ask you:
What decision are you facing right now?
And how will knowing that God wants to guide you, change the way you approach decision-making?
God truly is the wisest counselor…so let’s seek Him in practical matters today.
