The headlines are full of bad news, aren’t they?
Violence.
Injustice.
Suffering.
And there aren’t enough solutions to go around.
But on top of that, we each face bad news in our own lives.
An unexpected medical diagnosis.
A pink slip.
That call in the middle of the night.
Or the words, “We need to talk.”
Let’s face it. None of us are strangers to bad news.
But sometimes it can feel like that’s all there is.
So what do you do when good news is nowhere to be found?
Well, Psalm 4:6 gives us the answer to that question:
“Many are saying, “Who will show us any good?” Lift up the light of Your countenance upon us, O LORD!” (Psalm 4: 6 NASB)
When everything is falling apart, what we need—more than anything else—is to cry out “Lift up the light of Your countenance upon us, O Lord!”
You see, the word “countenance” in verse 6 literally means “face.” And so the Psalmist is basically crying out to God, saying: “Show us your face! Let us see the glory of who You are!”
Because, ultimately, that is our deepest need in suffering. We need to be reminded of who our God is. That He is good and loving. That He never leaves us or forsakes us. And that He is still in control.
Here’s the thing: Life is full of bad news. And everyday has its own challenges.
But while the headlines may change tomorrow, God won’t! He Himself is the good news we long for.
So will you set aside time to seek His face today?
Make an appointment with God and put it in your calendar—set an alarm if you need to!
And as you spend time in prayer and the Word, ask Him to show you the glory of who He is and then pay special attention to what the Bible says about God.
You know, we spend enough time listening to the bad news! So lets make sure we take time to hear the good news today.
