Not too long ago, I reached over to move a heavy box and felt my back give way.
Over the next few days, every little thing I tried to do was punctuated with a yelp of pain. I finally just had to lie down! I never realized how many muscles were connected to the back.
It reminded me of 1 Corinthians 12:12, which says this: “Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ.” (NIV)
Every Christian is a part of Christ’s body. We are intricately connected to each other.
So when one person in the body is hurting, it affects the whole body. And that pain should spur us into action.
Just as my hand unconsciously flew to support the weakness in my back, we as believers should rush to support our brother or sister who is hurting.
But sometimes, we can all admit, that’s not our first reaction. We draw back, unsure of what to do or say.
Here’s the encouraging part: the same Spirit that united us as one body in Christ is still working within us “to will and to do” God’s purposes. (Phil. 2:13)
So do you know a believer who is struggling or hurting right now?
Consider asking the LORD how He wants to use you—with your specific giftings—to support this broken member of the body.
And then ask the Holy Spirit within you to give you both the desire and ability to help.
Ultimately, God must do the healing work, but perhaps He wants to do a part of that work through you.
